Why the upper division writing exam should be eliminated

On April 29, thousands of students lined up along the outside of Bayramian Hall to register for the Upper Division Writing Proficiency Exam (UDWPE). According to an article by the Daily Sundial, students had been waiting to register for the exam that morning since 6 o’clock, despite the doors opening at 8:30 – it was the last registration date available for the last test offered this year before June. One student told the Sundial that although he is walking on… Read more

A review of today’s queer news foreshadows tomorrow’s

News this week has been a-buzz with developments from the queer-o-sphere and, while not all of it is particularly pleasant, they are each part of the beginning of a larger conversation toward change that we will be seeing in California and the rest of the U.S. No conversion therapy in California This past week, Sen. Ted Lieu, with the support of Equality California, brought a bill to the the Senate floor that would make it illegal for therapists and psychologists… Read more

Two young men challenge traditional ideas about gender and masculinity

He doesn’t look gay. In your life have you muttered that statement or at least of thought it? It’s a sentence that relies heavily on old stereotypes produced by our culture. He doesn’t look gay because he doesn’t have a limp wrist, hates musicals and packs on the muscle like it’s going out of style. The man is a man’s man, without the weird gay implications. Growing up in California, I found out early on that masculine qualities were, for all… Read more

Don’t let the man bring you down

Illustration by Gabriel Ivan Orendain-Necochea / Visual Editor

The same thing that makes many men a “manly” man is also the same thing that leads men to die, on average, 5-10 years before their female counterparts: masculinity. Some argue that this difference is due to the sex hormone, testosterone, which makes younger men prone to make rash decisions. While higher testosterone levels slowly harden men’s arteries, the impact of natural and biologically oriented masculinity on society is very slight. Past the age of 35, testosterone slowly declines—fortunate because… Read more

The case against procreation

Many of you probably don’t have children, yet.  Many of  you will ask yourselves whether it is better to breed or not to breed. Partners, family, friends, tradition and instinct will pressure you to have kids. I offer the alternative argument. Consider skipping it.  Save your time and money for yourself.  For those of you who have already reproduced, this advice comes too late; I apologize. I’m older than many of you, and I’ve observed some of my friends’ lives… Read more

Letter to the editor: In defense of Autism Speaks

Jeffrey Zide’s opinion piece on Autism Speaks presents a false impression of the nation’s largest autism science and advocacy organization. Zide  decries supposedly “shady finance” but ignores recent data which show that 72 cents of every dollar raised by Autism Speaks in 2011 went to fund its programs. This exceeds the Better Business Bureau’s  standard for charity accountability . Zide criticizes the volunteer involvement of the families of people with autism and quotes Prof. Jacob Hale’s comment that parents’ and… Read more

Creating change requires both your voice and your actions

Photo by Ken Scarboro / Editor in Chief

Last Thursday CSUN hosted two events that should have gone hand-in-hand.  “Where’s the Money?” gave an opportunity to learn more about the CSU’s budget and the second Big Politics event provided a chance to meet with people who can directly affect education. My question for all the students who were at Thursday’s “Where’s the Money?” lecture, all the student activists and all those who were not at Big Politics is: where the fuck were you? First up in the evening… Read more

Temporary marriage licenses not a solution to increasing divorce rates

Natalie Rivera Daily Sundial   In September, Mexico City lawmakers proposed legislation that would allow couples to apply for temporary marriage licenses. Under the law couples would be able to choose the length of their marriage, starting at a minimum of two years, and would be able to renew their licenses if they wished to be married longer. According to Assemblyman Leonoel Luna, who co-authored the bill, the short contract will slow down increasing divorce rates and free couples from… Read more
