With his CSUN career winding down, Vinnie McGhee took Saturday’s loss to Fresno State the hardest. In a postgame interview, after the Matadors shot a pitiful nine percent from the field in the second half en route to a 62-49 defeat, McGhee blamed the woeful performance on himself. “I’m mad the most, I didn’t only let my team down, I feel I let Northridge down,” said McGhee after scoring only three points and turning the ball over six times versus… Read more

Giving up more than one multiple-run inning in a single game is always a remedy for disaster, and that’s just what CSUN did in its home opener Tuesday against No. 22 UCLA. CSUN (2-2) gave up a two-run shot and a three-run triple in the third inning, putting itself in a 5-0 hole that not even a nine-hit day could help as it lost 19-7. “We always want to score first,” CSUN head coach Matt Curtis said. “It puts you… Read more

Weekly Column: Taking one too many shots: OKC guard Westbrook should leave scoring duties to Durant

Coming off back-to-back victories against the Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Hornets in which the Oklahoma City Thunder’s one-two punch of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 91 and 62 points respectively, one thing was proven for sure: Westbrook shoots the ball too damn much. Durant, who’s currently third in the league in scoring, averaging 27.7 points per game, scored the most in that two-game stretch, but didn’t take the most shots. Though Westbrook tallied an impressive 71 points… Read more

The road hasn’t been kind to the Matadors so far this year, and it’ll continue to be a challenge as CSUN heads to Irvine tonight to face the Anteaters. CSUN (4-8, 2-6 MPSF) has yet to earn its first win away from Northridge this season and the Anteaters (10-3, 6-3) will be one of the tougher teams the Matadors will have to face. “They have two good outside (hitters), they’re consistently hitting well, their opposites are one of the best… Read more

Softball: Matadors have another 0-5 weekend in Las Vegas

Things couldn’t get worse for CSUN after it started its season by going 0-5 while being outscored 50-5 at the Kajikawa Classic a week ago. Unfortunately for them, things didn’t get better either. CSUN followed up a more-than-inauspicious season-opening weekend with an equally-poor trip to Las Vegas in which it faced five teams and lost to all of them. The Matadors (0-10) were outscored 54-12 this time around. The Matadors started the UNLV Louisville Classic Friday with their best performance… Read more

Baseball: Williams’ home run helps CSUN take series at Sac State

The Matadors finished up the weekend series at Sacramento State with a 5-3 win behind a Miles Williams three-run homerun in the second inning. Williams smacked a first-pitch fastball over the right field fence scoring teammates Todd Eskilin and Marty Bowen to put CSUN (2-1) ahead of the Hornets, 3-1. Junior Jacob Peterson earned the win for CSUN after allowing eight hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings of work. Freshmen Brandon Warner and Jacob Leyba combined to finish… Read more

Men’s basketball: CSUN shoots nine percent in second half, falls to Fresno State in BracketBuster

fsf

In the four years CSUN guard Vinnie McGhee has been with the Matadors, he’s been part of many memorable games, but what transpired Saturday was a night he would like to forget. In what likely was the worst half in the program’s history, CSUN (7-18) collapsed in the second twenty minutes of Saturday night’s BracketBuster match against Fresno State(12-14), only making two baskets and shooting nine percent from the field en route to a 62-49 defeat at the Matadome. McGhee,… Read more

It started with exactly 10 minutes left in the second half with the Matadors down 45-32. Center Jasmine Erving had just made a jumper. Forward Violet Alama got a layup 29 seconds later. Then, with 8:35 left to go, Alama drained CSUN’s only trey of the game to cut UC Davis’s lead to 10. And then they came out like pink bats out of hell. Northridge (16-10 10-3 Big West) made clutch baskets and defensive stops, and outscored the Aggies… Read more
